Description
During my first visit to Budapest, I photographed this monument during the day but since then I had it in my mind that I wanted to go back to photograph it at night. I finally got my chance, and after many rainy evenings the last night of our visit was clear. Lots of other people had the same idea so it was a bit tricky to get an exposure before someone walked in front of you! It took about an hour and many tries. Still you get the feeling of vitality in the square as you see people strolling, hurrying, or just standing. The Millenium Monument in Budapest Hungary, sometimes referred to as Millenary Monument, is a Who's Who of Hungarian history. Like many things in Budapest, this was built to celebrate the country's 1,000th birthday in 1896. The centerpiece of the Millennium Monument is the triumphal column that rises to a height of thirty-six meters (118 ft) above Heroes' Square. At the top of the column stands a statue of archangel Gabriel, holding a crown in his right hand. According to legend the archangel appeared to St. Stephen in a dream and offered him the crown of Hungary. At the bottom of the central column is Arpad and 6 other Magyar chieftains, the founders of the present day country of Hungary. In front of the pillar is the Hungarian War Memorial, fenced in to keep out the skateboarders. Each statue in the archways of the two colonnades represents a great Hungarian leader. Atop the colonnades are statues representing (from left to right) Labor and Wealth, War, Peace, Knowledge and Glory.
