Artist's Description
This is a typical workboat working on the Chesapeake Bay. His is tonging for oysters with a rig called a patent tong. At the end of a long cable are tongs open and closed across an oyster bar by the waterman. When he deems that the tong is full, the basket is raised from the bottom, emptied on a board where sorting the oysters takes place. In this image he is working only one tong, probably because his mate couldn't go out that day and he has to work alone.
