Description
Mojave Crater. Satellite image of wall terraces in the Mojave Crater on the surface of Mars. In this image the vertical dimension has been exaggerated three-fold over the horizontal dimension. This shows material that has ponded and is backed up behind large blocks of bedrock. Ponding is a common feature of Martian impact craters and is thought to be a result of material melted during the impact being captured behind the wall terraces. Image obtained by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO).
