This is such a powerfully beautiful piece. Much aloha to you.

James Temple replied:

Aloha Heidi, Mahalo for the comment.

Your description is so eloquent and true, James. For those who have a deep aloha for the aina, there is probably nothing more moving to the heart than seeing the ancient hulas performed. This image is absolutely beautiful! Thank-you, James, for sharing this wonderful image of home. l/f

James Temple replied:

Very pleased with the card

I bought this card for a woman whose husband loved Johnny Cash. He died suddenly a few weeks ago. He had always said that when he died he didn’t want a funeral, that he wanted his friends to gather at a bar and drink a glass of whiskey or something else in his memory while a Johnny Cash song played in the background. And his family honored those wishes. In that vein I wanted to search for a card that was not the usual bereavement card. I had the idea of something related to Johnny Cash and I found this beautiful card with the perfect cover words and illustration. I was able to personalize it with my own words, which were imprinted inside the card. Needless to say, my friend loved the personal nature of the card and how fitting it was to her husband’s interests. The card arrived very quickly and in perfect condition. I am very happy with all aspects of this purchase. Thank you.

Artist's Description

Every year towards the end of May, the hula is celebrated at the Molokai Ka Hula Piko Festival (Molokai, the center of the dance). To the Hawaiian people, hula means something much deeper than a form of entertainment or a competition to gain reputation. It is their culture and ancient ways expressed in a dance that comes from within, from the center, the piko. The hula originated here on Molokai and every year I look forward to photographing my neighbors celebrating their culture. This image is a photograph of a wahine dancer at the Molokai Ka Hula Piko. The photo was converted into a digital watercolor.

About James Temple

James Temple

I have lived in Hawaii for the past 16 years, 1200 feet above sea level, on the small rural island of Moloka'i. It is very quiet here, with only about 7,500 residents, sort of like living in a small town in the middle of the Pacific ocean. I appreciate the quiet life after spending 35 years in the advertising/design/illustration business in Chicago and San Francisco. I have always loved cooking. Eventually that love led me to a degree in the Culinary Arts. Since then I have designed and built a house, worked in restaurants, self-published three cookbooks, and took up photography. Now retired, I spend most of my time developing recipes and photographing them, plus researching and writing about Hawaii's culinary history on my food blog...
