This was the second time I have been back to see Mont St-Michel. The first was without a camera in tow.

This magical tidal island topped by a spire abbey, presented like a wedding cake, the Mt St Michel and its Bay are one of France’s most stunning sights especially at sunset or sunrise. For centuries one of Europe’s major pilgrimage destinations, this holy island is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Le Mont is located in both Normandy and Brittany along the north west coastal side of the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Couesnon River near Avranches.

This pilgrimage site dates back to the 8th century, when Aubert, bishop of the nearby hilltop town of Avranches, claimed that the Archangel Michael himself had pressured him into having a church built atop the island just out to sea.

The Abby's position on an island just a few hundred metres from land made it accessible at low tide to the many pilgrims to the abbey, but defensible as an incoming tide stranded, drove off, or drowned would-be assailants. At various places around the Abby there is quicksand, making it imperative would be visitor's use a quide to access the Abby at low tide, The quick rising tides also present dangerous barriers to the imformed.

The island remained unconquered during the Hundred Years' War; a small garrison fended off a full attack by the English in 1433.[7] Louis XI recognised the reverse benefits of its natural defence and turned it into a prison. The abbey was used regularly as a prison during the Ancien Régime.

Mont-Saint-Michel and its surrounding bay were inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1979 for its unique aesthetic and importance as a medieval Christian site.
