Artist's Description
Moon of Fatness was the first piece of art Dawn created after returning home from her first Sun Dance. Although it makes no direct reference to this powerful experience, it reflects some of her excitement and expresses the strong impact it had on her art, writing, and life.
The title refers to the month of June (roughly -- the Lakota calendar is lunar), when the wild grasses grow thick and luxuriant for the buffalo to fatten themselves before winter.
The wild grasses she has carved include Indian millet, foxtail, eared brome, fescue, needlegrass, and wheatgrass. The plant on the other side is the sacred sage. The turtle represents "long life." The reddish designs, which surround the white profile silhouette of a bison's head, were created by beetle larvae who chewed tunnels into an old piece of weathered ranch fence.
About Dawn Senior-Trask
I have been an artist since I was knee high to a short-horned locust. My dad, Willoughby Senior (FAA) was a professional artist and writer and I have stepped in his shoes since I was born, though he drew horses better than I did when I was a kid. My family lived in a hand-hewn log cabin we built ourselves in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and had no water or electricity. I love my life with my husband and family in Wyoming among the horses, gophers, deer, antelope, coyotes, red-tailed hawks, and the wild landscape. My work is driven by the land, animals, wild plants and birds I have come to know so well. Hummingbirds still try to get nectar from my upturned fingers. My artwork consists of all these things and more...

Simply beautiful! I can really appreciate the detail in this piece.... I have only a very few hand carved stamps and printing blocks 'cause it hurts my hand so when I make them... When I saw this, I saw staring at it with my mouth wide open! Great work!

Love this piece.

This is just so incredibly beautiful. The seeming simplicity evokes a tender emotion in me. Perhaps the white buffalo may even be a ghost buffalo because I feel a certain sadness in what is lost. Still, there is great life here in the movement of the buffalo and the singing of the meadowlark.
