Description
Being a photographer of opportunity, I noticed this rapidly evolving scene while standing on the 11th floor of the Congress Hotel in Chicago looking down Congress Avenue. I challenged myself to capture the fast moving summer storm blowing by just after sunset. It is probably the most complicated image I have ever produced. I took about 200 hand-held shots of varying exposures and zoom ranges over a one hour period to capture everything just right. Not only did I see the moon rise, I also watched the clouds stream by the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower). The picture is comprised of 4 different shots and 27 layers in Photoshop. Because the images were taken with a wide-angle lens, the distorted architecture lines needed to be straighten and sized in each photo before they were composited together and color corrected to match. The post production time in Photoshop was over 10 hours.
