Description
The nearly full moon rose over Bren Mountain in Tucson Mountain Park west of Tucson, Arizona and was captured at just the moment before the sun slipped below the western horizon at sunset in early spring.
I had just finished a long hike across the desert and gotten back to my car right before sunset. Looking up, I saw that the nearly full moon had risen behind Bren Mountain in Tucson Mountain Park. The scene I saw immediately reminded me of a portrait version of Ansel Adams’s “Moonrise over Hernandez, New Mexico”. It is not that I deliberately set out to try such a composition. But when the opportunity arose I made the best of it I could. I hightailed it, bushwhacking up a ridge just as the sun kissed the western horizon behind me. I only had seconds to compose, focus and shoot. All very similar to the story behind Adams’s image, down to the point where moments after making the image the sunlight disappeared from the foreground and the moment was gone forever. Except in the memory of my mind and my camera.
Tucson Mountain Park was created in the 1929 by Pima County and the park is one of the largest natural resource areas owned and managed by a local government in the U.S. At one time it was over 30,000 acres, but in the early 1960's Pima County deeded the northern third to the Federal Government for the creation of Saguaro National Monument, which became Saguaro National Park in 1994.
