Description
Mount Rainier dominates the skyline above the 6,500 foot level of Yakima Park in Mount Rainier National Park. Yakima Park is the name of the gently sloping meadow to the south side of Sunrise Ridge, and is where the Sunrise Visitor's Center is located.
This photograph of the spectacular 14,410 foot tall mountain was made on a rare, crystal clear July morning just after sunrise. The sharp peak to the left is named Little Tahoma, and is a remnant of a previous iteration of this magnificent mountain before vulcanism and glacial erosion reduced its vast size. The great glacier north of Little Tahoma is the Emmonds Glacier which descends from the summit deep into the White River Valley below.
Two triangular points of rock at the center, commonly called "The Wedge" separate the Emmons Glacier from the Winthrop Glacier. The top of "The Wedge" is Steamboat Prow, where Camp Schurman is located. This is the starting point for climbs to the summit at Columbia Crest. Close examination of the photograph will reveal the actual climbing trail through the snow and over the glacier.
When I see Mount Rainier I feel like I’m seeing an old friend again. I have hiked many of its trails, visited with many of the animals, seen sights that left me in awe and wonder, and survived deep early autumn snowfalls in its parks and valleys. One of the great memories of my youth was leaving camp in the pre-dawn darkness and climbing to the top of Burroughs Mountain on the northeast shoulder of Mount Rainier to experience the sunrise. It was stunningly clear, and it almost seemed like you could just reach over the valley below and touch the great mountain. I knew I could never repeat that experience, but I wanted to attempt to photograph something similar if I could. That chance came near 50 years later on this magnificent summer morning. It was a morning of most sublime magic; an exquisite time to be alive and to witness the grandeur of the moment. I cherish the memory.
