Description
Every day on the coast, the colors of the sand and the sea and the ocean are different, depending upon the color of the sky itself.
On a sunny day, with a blue sky, the ocean gleams blue and the reflection of the rocks on the water adds a deeper element of this blue. On other mornings – mornings that we would call a Grey Day – the colors are more subdued, more neutral, more . . . grey, one could say.
But grey on the coast isn’t a bad thing. There is a coolness to the breeze, sometimes a slight fog, that gives and element of mystery and intrigue to the seascape, and a an early morning on the beach during low tide takes the hiker around and through the rocks that stand sentinel on the coast.
Morning Tide invites the viewer to join into the painting on just such a day. The tide is going out, and the receding water from the last wave has left a reflective sheen on the sand, giving it a sense, in a way, of being a mirror.
And because the morning is cool, and maybe a little grey, the weekend visitors who have come up to fly kites under sunny skies may decide to spend more of the morning in their hotel room, or a longer time over the breakfast table at the restaurant. Because of this, the intrepid walker who zips into a warm jacket and stuffs on a hat, finds that the beach belongs exclusively to him or her, as well as the gulls who live here all the time.
There are no human distractions – people busy talking on their cell phones, when they’re right next to the waves! – to draw one’s mind and eye from the silence, the tranquility, the peace, and the beauty of the beach.
