Day trippin' at Mt. Wachusett, near the summit, in Princeton, MA.
While exploring in Central Massachusetts, I found many of these reddish/orange salamander like animals. I assumed it was no different than the average salamander, excluding its color and the black ringed red spots on its back. Weeks later I discovered that what I had found was quite a extraordinary creature. It was an Eastern Newt called a 'red eft.' The eastern newts have 3 forms, a larval aquatic form, followed by a immature land form called an 'eft' and finally the aquatic adult form. In each form it changes color and body shape. First it is black and looks tadpole like. In it adolescents it grows legs and its tail looks more reptile like and it is a reddish/orange. In adult form its tail and feet morph back to a more fish like shape and it becomes an olive color on top and a yellow underneath. What a strange animal it is!
