I always have a sense of awe at the gifts Mother Nature gives us. I photographed this small orchid today, and then put it through a watercolor program here on the Hawaiian island of Moloka'i.

I bought this little beauty at our farmers market. After a little research I found out that it is called Spathoglottis plicata, in the family: Orchidaceae. It is the most common terrestrial (ground dwelling) orchid. Softly textured, pleated leaves to 3 feet long emerge in February from egg-shaped pseudobulbs about 2" in diameter. The flowers range in color from white to purple and are borne on erect spikes to 3 ft tall.

Flowers open a few at a time at the top of the stem and each stem can last for months. In Sri Lanka to the Pacific Islands it blooms throughout the year. Over the last century, Spathoglottis plicata has become naturalized in tropical and semitropical areas of the U.S., such as in Hawaii and Florida, where it grows in the wild and is used for landscaping. I've lived in Hawaii since 2002, 1200 feet above sea level, on the small rural island of Moloka'i. It is very quiet here, with only about 7,400 residents. I appreciate the quiet life after spending 35 years as a commercial illustrator, senior art director and design director for major advertising agencies and design studios in Chicago, San Francisco and Palo Alto California. I've always loved cooking. In 2002 that love led me to a degree in the Culinary Arts just before moving to Hawaii. Since then I designed and built a house, worked in local restaurants, self-published three cookbooks, and took up photography as a hobby. Now retired, I spend most of my time developing recipes and photographing them, plus researching and writing...
