The Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) is among the largest of waterfowl, seen most commonly in bays, marshes and ponds on the upper eastern coast of the United States, as well as around the Great Lakes. It has a longer tail than most other swans, white plumage with a yellowish neck, striking orange bill with a dark base and raised black knob, and a gently curved neck, often gracefully S-curved. It measures about 60 inches in length and about 22 pounds in weight. Mute Swans are protective of their territory and young, and can be aggressive and nasty to intruders.

This portrait of an adult Mute Swan preening while calmly floating on the water was photographed in Greenwich Harbor, in Greenwich, Connecticut on 5-9-2015. I used a Nikon D800 camera body and a Nikon 300mm f/2.8 vr2 lens to capture this image.
