These beautiful springtime flowers because they bloom early they have become a symbol of Chinese New Year. If it blooms on the Chinese New Year it is said it will bring wealth and good fortune through out the year. According to ancient Greek lore the gods turned the remains of a vain youth (Narcissus) who became obsessed with his reflection, into the flower.
Another version; Greek mythology relates a story of Proserpina. She was out about gathering lilies, when the god Pluto kidnapped her and took her to the underworld. Proserpina dropped the bouquet and as the lilies hit the ground the were transformed into daffodils. The flower of the daffodil hangs its head in sorrow for Proserpina.
