Description
One of the most stunning views in England must surely be the view from West Hill, Hastings! Even though I see it everyday, it always blows me away and fills me with love for this amazing jewel of a town.
The vast spaciousness of the sea and sky contrast strongly with the intriguing chaos of Old Town roofs. They throw up angles in every direction as they cascade down from the east and west hills to the Bourne valley between, with Rock-a-Nore and the iconic net huts to the south.
The culture of Old Town is vibrant, quirky and bohemian. Filled with artists and musicians, unusual shops, lovely pubs and cafés and the famous Jerwood gallery. Yet if one wishes for solitude and immersion in nature there are hundreds of acres of beautiful countryside in the Hastings Country park a short climb away (or ride on the funicular) up on East Hill. And to the south - the English channel and the possibility to swim or sail off into the freedom of the sea.
I've wanted to paint this view every since I arrived in Hastings but have kept delaying as I knew how difficult it would be! At last its done and I've found that it was a great joy to capture the love and wonder I feel for Hastings.
