Description
Anybody who owns livestock knows that there is something about The Other Side of the Fence.
The grass is better. Greener. Longer. More tasty.
It must be, for goats and cattle, sheep and horses push their noses and as much of their faces as possible through whatever size of holes the fence possesses. If the animal is big enough and the fence is wobbly enough, they’ll push all the way through and over.
It’s so common that we’ve made an adage about it: The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, to describe our dissatisfaction with our present situation, and our longing for another, on . . . just the other side of the fence.
Is it true? ARE things better on the other side of the fence, or just different?
The artwork, Other Side of the Fence, invites the viewer to look down the hillside to the farm below. It looks peaceful down there where the buildings are nestled in the valley, tucked into the hillside, surrounded by trees.
But it is peaceful up here as well, atop the hill where we command a view of the valley. We see the farm from a different perspective here than we would if we were below, in the midst of the buildings and trees.
Both places are quiet, both peaceful, both beautiful. They’re just different.
And while, someday, we may climb over the fence, scramble down through the grass, and make our way to that little farm, today we have opportunity to explore where we are standing. It is a cool autumn afternoon, the sun plays tag through the clouds, and the air is clear and fresh, crisp and clean.
It’s a good place to be, here, on this side of the fence. Let’s explore all the options under our feet first, and then we’ll move on over the fence, along it, past it, around it. We’ll know what to do when the time comes.
