Ouray County lies in southwest Colorado and encompasses a beautiful and diverse landscape, including the headwaters of the Uncompahgre River in the high country of the San Juan Mountains, the broad mesas of the Uncompahgre Plateau region, and the valley of the Uncompahgre River.
The county covers 542 square miles - roughly an area of 20 by 30 miles - with a population of some 4500 people. It has just one stoplight. If you travel north from this stoplight (in Ridgway) on Highway 550, and turn right on County Road 10 just a short distance away, you'll see the Cimarron Range up ahead, featuring one of the most distinctive mountain skylines found anywhere. Behind you, over your right shoulder, you'll see this spectacular view of the Sneffels Range in the San Juan Mountains to the southwest.
In my viewfinder, I always try to fully capture the embarrassment of scenic riches found in this one location. But I never succeed.
