Description
The Pantheon in Rome is one of the most magnificent buildings of antiquity. Built under Emperor Trajan around 114, the Pantheon had the largest dome in the world for more than 1700 years, measured by its inner diameter. Built on the Mars field, the Pantheon was probably a sanctuary dedicated to all the gods of Rome. In 609 the Pantheon was converted into a Christian church and consecrated to St Mary and all Christian martyrs.
From the Renaissance onwards, the Pantheon, in its function as a church, became the tomb of important artists, including the painter Raphael (1483-1520) and the architect Baldassare Peruzzi (1481-1536),the painter Perino del Vaga (1501-1547), the painter Giovanni da Udine (1487-1564), the painter Taddeo Zuccari (1529-1566), the painter Annibale Carracci (1560-1609), the composer Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713). The two Italian kings Viktor Emanuel II and Umberto I are also buried there.
It is an incredible feeling to stand in this fantastic building. My work shows the impressive entrance area at night and I hope you can find the special charisma of the building.
