Pencil, ink and watercolor painting by award-winning Australian artist Dai Wynn depicting a hawthorn tree in full bloom on the narrow Ile aux Cygnes (Isle of Swans) in the centre of the River Seine in Paris. 300 gsm rough surface Arches french cotton paper. 30 cm high X 21 cm wide (11.75 inches X 8.25 inches) approximately - A4.
Some of my friends wonder why I have changed my name from David to Dai. The short answer is that I havent. My parents, sisters and immediate family always used Dai (but pronounced day) as a short form of David a nickname if you like. However, it appears that the Welsh adopted the name "Dai (pronounced die) as a short form of Dafydd (pronounced Dahveth) the patron saint of Wales and also known as St David just across Offas Dyke. Why Wales? Well the name Wynn means fair-skinned or white in the Welsh language and my ancestors were certainly from around those parts (others were from Ireland and Cornwall, but paid full fare to sail to Australia. Dai...this is so beautiful..so well composed. the idea of adding a hawthorn tree is fantastic.This makes this picture unique.

Actually Gilberte, the hawthorn is growing on the island, but I had great trouble painting the brilliant pink flowers. Watercolours somehow don't lend themselves to bright colours, as do oils or acrylics.
