Beach chairs on Topsail Island, North Carolina. On the left, a rocking chair sits on the coastline. I remember carrying this rocker down from the beach house. One thing is for sure, it is not a plastic rocker. It is solid wood and required a bit of effort to lift it down the stairs and down to the shore. But there is something very humbling and fulfilling about chairs on the beach. I love to sit and watch the waves, feel the wind, see the tiny grains of sand shift as the breeze passes like an old friend, perhaps even like a whispering ghost at times. There is a silence within the silence, a voice within the voice that speaks, comes to the surface when we listen. A silence in-between a set of waves, a pause, a shift in attention to something else, an unconscious directive of cause and effect. We know. We are the ones who sit at the foot of the waves. We listen. Because that's what we do right now in this moment. We listen and are filled with peace and purpose that lasts a lifetime.
