Description
The long-tailed weasel (often referred to as an ermine) is the most widely distributed mustelid in North America. They are found in open or semi-open habitats near water. Their diet consists mainly of rodents, which they will chase into dens. Adult males are 14-18 inches in length while females are generally smaller. They have brown fur that molts to pure white in the winter. The tip of their tail stays black year round.
As I patiently waited, tucked into the sagebrush and grasses in Yellowstone National Park, this curious little weasel kept popping up and checking me out as I watched and photographed his antics.
