Description
Fine art wildlife photograph capturing a breeding pair of Pelagic Cormorants (Phalacrocorax pelagicu) perched near their nest on a rocky cliff face above the Pacific Ocean in Mendocino County, California. These gorgeous seabirds, cloaked in metallic, iridescent breeding plumage, are part of a small nesting colony that builds their on narrow ledges in coves above the water.
Pelagic Cormorants use seaweed, ice plant, grasses and even wildflowers to layer their nests and solidify the plant material with their guano to cement it together. These ocean going birds that hunt food mainly in the neritic zone, feed by diving as deep as 100 feet to catch fish, crustaceans, marine worms and others sea creatures that live in kelp beds.
Their glossy feathers are not waterproof so they rely on their vestigial uropygial, or preening, gland to oil their feathers after spreading them to dry.
