Innocence was a mainstay of the culture of the Victorian middle class. No matter that a gentleman might patronize prostitutes regularly; in the home, wives and daughters were expected to be pure and high-minded. The Victorian world was full of schizoid thinking and behavior, of which this is but one example. This delicately simple penny postcard would no doubt have been thought quite appropriate for sending to a proper young lady.
This painting has been FEATURED in too many groups to list.
