Artist's Description
Philip IV of Spain. Oil-on-canvas painting of Philip IV (1605-1665), who reigned as King of Spain from 1621 to his death. He was also King of Portugal from 1621 to 1640. Philip IV was a member of the Habsburg dynasty that ruled in several countries in Europe. Like many of the later Habsburgs, he had a protruding lower jaw and lip (the 'Habsburg jaw'). This condition, known as mandibular prognathism, was one of the results of many generations of inbreeding. This portrait dates from around 1628, and shows the king in Flemish cavalry parade armour. He holds a commander's baton in his right hand and wears an ornate rapier on his left hip. The painting is by Flemish artist Gaspar de Crayer.
