Melaphyr. Polarised light micrograph of a thin section of melaphyr, a basaltic igneous rock. Melaphyr is fine-grained and black or reddish brown in appearance, and is found in Germany. It has tiny vesicular bubbles which are often filled by inclusion minerals such as agate, calcite, chlorite and quartz. The main use of melaphyr is as an aggregate in road building. Magnification x18 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x30 at 5x4inch size.
