Description
An American flag flies proudly in front of Point Betsie lighthouse on the northeast coast of Lake Michigan. The name comes from the French translation of the local Native American word for sawbill (becs scies) ducks, mergansers that frequented a river a few miles to the south. Built between 1854 and 1858, the lighthouse sits high on the dunes; its lake side is protected by a concrete ring; the barrier was added in 1890 to prevent erosion. With its white bricks, red roof, and green trim, the facility is a visual showstopper, especially on a blue sky day.
