A flick of the switch and the row of lights blink to life. Flickering and twinkling, one by one they steady themselves as the various systems run through their checklists and report for duty. Ready to go, he turns a little key at the top. A low, whisper with a distinctly electrical flavor rises.
Little, wide eyes look up at him in earnest, naked with concern and question. Seeing no smile on the boy, he offers his own - "It's ok. Remember, those are good noises, just like we talked about. You're a-ok, ready for takeoff, Mr. Pilot!"
The lad smiles back, but it's a half-hearted attempt.
He adjusts his grip on the remote and rolls a rocker forward with his thumb, slowly, eyes steady on the boy. The whisper turns to a deep hum, rhythmically speeding faster and faster. The lights turn from green to blue and his thumb moves to one of the small joysticks.
With a squeal of fearful excitement, the boy rises. Just a little.
He eases the joystick as slowly as he can manage, bringing his son up to chest level, releasing the control. The boy's eyes race about in a panic - screams and tears seem imminent. But now that he's just hovering, it gives the child a moment to catch up, to process. He was ok - just like daddy said he would be! He locked eyes again with his father.
"See! You're fine! I've gotcha. Just relax - not gonna let anything bad happen to 'ya! Gonna keep it slow - just let me know when you're too scared 'n I'll bring 'ya down."
He pushes the stick again - he means to barely nudge it, but his own nerves are at play as well. His hands shake a bit and he pushes a little harder than he intends to. The boy zooms upwards, making 10 feet, maybe 12 by the time he's let go of the stick. 'Uh oh', he thinks.
The boy squeals again, but this time it's clearly the joy kind. Waving his arms wildly, the flying pants have earned the lad's trust. "Yaaaaaay!"
Emboldened by the child's bravery, he moves the other stick, spinning the device slowly. The kid shrieks - it's love! He starts moving the sticks in concert, gliding the boy around in an arc above. The boy stretches his arms out like wings, making jet noises.
'It's working! Just like it was supposed to!' A moment of pure bliss. A moment broken by the faint sound of sirens in the distance.
It didn't matter. Let 'em come. He's proven it now - it works! The kid's fine and, oh man, it works perfectly! What happened last time was just a mistake - they'll see that now. Accidents happen when chasing greatness. And this is pretty damn great! This makes up for his brother - for all of that! Wait'll they see this now!
