This great blue heron was looking through the spatterdock on Lakeland, Florida's Lake Morton in late September of 2016 hoping to find a meal. Great blue herons (ardea herodias) can be found in any watery habitat from Alaska and Canada, down through the United States into Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and the northern tip of South America. They are a partial migrant, moving only when the water freeze over and a rare vagrant to Europe.
The largest of the North American herons, they measure from 38.2" to 53.9" in length with a wingspan between 65.7" and 79.1." They have long yellow legs, a sinuous neck, and a thick daggerlike yellow bill with a dark top. The wings are broad and rounded with a light grey forewing and darker flight feathers. Light grey overall, they have white streaks down the front of their neck, a wide black stripe over their eyes and dark trailing feathers on the back of the head. Like many of the old generation of photographers, I began with a Kodak box brownie when I was a kid. When I saw what resulted, I was hooked. Having grown up with an aunt who was a professional artist, I was always exposed to the creative arts. As a result, I have always liked to paint. Later I went to the Defense Information School at Ft.
