Thanks Kristina, the Siena Duomo is one of the most decorated Churches that I have ever visited.

Beautiful work!

Awesome drawing and story behind it.

Norman Bean replied:

Thank you Mr. Buxbaum. Ceilings and the underside of the roof are little appreciated aspects of architecture.

When possible drawing on site is preferred. I draw only what I've seen with my own eyes. So far, in my travels, docents and guards get a little crabby if I stand and draw for too long. So, yes, like you, I take many electronic photos. I will often start a drawing to get a feel for a view or place and go back home and use the photos like a 'still life'. I like to alter the perspectives, placements, lighting and focus to work for the dramatic.... but there is something special that is almost magical as the contrast and detail get worked in. When looking at my travel pictures, I'll make sketches incorporating various ideas and use the best ones as still life studies to work from. The Prophets drawing has about 40 hours from conception to completion. Through FAA none of my images have sold, yet. On my own I've sold hundreds of prints, loose and framed/matted, and a few original drawings. My real goal is to sell the original drawings. Sales seems to be an art form in its own right. I saw that you have over one thousand images with FAA. Do make many sales? You have obviously travelled a bit to have such variety.

Norman Bean replied:

Ahhh, yes! A print of the Colosseo sold a couple of weeks ago...

Thanks so much for your interesting reply. Do you sit in person to make your drawings? Maybe a photograph? I AM ANAZED BY YOUR TALENT! I hope you will do well selling your prints.

Dear Ms. Phelps, This drawing was a little bit daunting, a challenge actually. As I was designing this picture, before committing to the 'good paper,' there were two considerations. One is that the image was like a big target with the light of the 'lantern' at the center of the dome being the bull's eye surrounded by concentric circles. And two, there are over eighty 'squares' in the dome, all slightly different in size, shape and shading. Breaking up the 'target' look with the column supporting the dark ceiling make the picture work for me. The people depicted ringing the dome are some of the folks who put up time, energy and money to build the Duomo in 1100 and 1200 AD.

I love your fine art drawings. This piece is full of the wonderful play of light and dark showing the valuse of light to total dark in a delightful way. The reflections you created from the opening in the dome add to the persective and depth of this image. The detail in the dark areas is very well done. You are definately a true artist! I was lead to your work through a contest on FAA. O wonder how many hours it takes to do a work like this?

Complete disappointment. The display image for ordering is crisp and detailed. The actual item is off-registration and completely illegible. We had no choice but to give it as a gift, albeit with profound apologies. 2-star rating is for quality and fit of the garment only. Image rates a 0.

I love it! I haven’t gifted it yet, but I look forward to doing that.

Honestly not the quality I expected . It would look better if it didn't have the square around the bird. Meaning bird only

I bought these onesies for my grandchildren, somehow my product was lost in transit, I contacted both usps and fine art, usps said it shipped but never made it to them. Fine art emailed me back and shipped what i ordered within days. I hold a high standard to a company that does this. And therefore I WILL order again. Most companies will say its your loss but not Fine Art

Artist's Description

PROPHETS AND PATRIARCHS 2010, graphite on paper, 11 x 14 The Duomo di Siena (Cathedral of Siena) in Siena, Italy, was designed and built between 1215 and 1263. The interior of the nave and transept is decorated in black and white marble stripes, the traditional colors of Sienas civic coat of arms. The dodecagonal dome is supported by six pillars, each adorned with statues of Sienas patron saints. Above the saints, ringing the domes drum, is a columned gallery of statues of patriarchs and prophets.

About Norman Bean

It always amazes me when I look back at the drawings I have created over the years: the time and energy, study and hand training, not to mention actually being present with my subject to find the best angle, perspective, lighting and detail. And sometimes, when I am not satisfied, experimenting with sketch after sketch before daring to put pencil to the expensive drawing paper. The reality for me, in applying my art, is observing my subject. Really looking and understanding. Once I get set on an idea for a subject, I get out the thick, expensive drawing paper. It's always a matter of figuring out where everything is going to go, lightly sketching a line drawing that identifies the points, angles and perspectives,...
