RANDSBURG CALIFORNIA

From 1860-1873 miners dry-washed for gold in what was later known as the Rand Mining District. All the area around Red Mountains, the Summit in El Paseo Mountains and the Rand Mountain bore the �digging�s� mark of man. Gold showed in all these placer mines. Then, in 1893 three miners from the Summit Placers mines were prospecting three miles to the south when they struck it rich -- the Famous Yellow Aster Mine was discovered. Towns such as Randsburg, Johannesburg, Red Mountain and Atolia are a few that sprang into existence. In the painting are shown the Post Office and store at the west end of Main Street. Many of the saloons and old stores are standing and in use. Once a year the Rand Mining District celebrates the old days with drilling contests, guided tours, pancake races and a big dance. Evelyne Boynton Grierson ~ The Painter of Western Ghost Towns 1909 - 1994 The artist, author and "Painter of Western Ghost Towns", Evelyne Boynton Grierson, was born three miles off the shore of California near the town of Walnut Grove in 1909. After the death of her mother, Evelyne was raised by two aunts. Her school years where spent in Los Angeles, where she excelled in the arts. After High School she went to live with her Aunt Kate in Iowa, where she attended college, and continued her education in art. Evelyne was born with the ability to paint.
