Description
Rectal polyp. Coloured double contrast X-ray showing a polyp in a patient's rectum. Polyps are benign (non-cancerous) growths that arise from mucous membranes. Although benign, polyps are generally removed surgically as their growth may obstruct the passage of food, and some polyps may turn cancerous over time. This image was taken after a barium enema. Barium is radio-opaque and therefore shows up as white on an X-ray.
