Description
Red algae. Light micrograph of the freshwater red alga Batrachospermum. Red algae are an ancient and primitive type of aquatic plant. This alga can range in colour from purple to green. It is also called frogspawn, because in ponds, bogs and lakes it can form a gelatinous mass that resembles frogspawn. The strands consist of multiple filaments of small bead-like cells. The texture is slimy due to this alga being covered in a thick mucilage. Mucilage is a substance produced by many plants, containing glycoproteins and large polysaccharides. Magnification: x70 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
