I was surprised to learn the tiny white and pink flower was the flower. I had "assumed" the red leaves were the flower and the white and pink was some sort of fancy stigma or stamen. Even more surprising is the leaves are called bracts. The purpose of the red bracts is to protect the flowers and attract the attention of pollinators, such as insects and hummingbirds. Another surprise; the bracts do not photosynthesize like leaves! Three bracts surround three flowers, one of which has not opened yet, in this photo. If you look at the center of the lower flower, you can see the yellow pistil. The flower is smaller than my little finger's nail.
