Shortly after a visit to Israel, I attended a communion service in a large mission home in Holland. On the wall hung a wreath made from a branch of a Crown of Thorns bush, which grows in Israel. The symbolism took on a new power. The bread and wine, with which we are so familiar, took on a new sense of cost.
Jesus words in Luke 22 verses 14 to 20 as He gave thanks, shared out the bread and the wine and told them: Do this in remembrance of Me, must have been bewildering to the disciples as they sat with Him. Understanding came later.
For us too, if our hearts are open, understanding is a progressive thing.
Look up 'Given for You', by Graham Braddock, which isa more contemporary approach to this subject.
