This is truly a totally realistic reproduction of the cold, wet, uncomfortable and risky duties of a lifeboat launching and recovery crew in Walmer in 1944. It was my first connection with the RNLI then lasting continuously over 65 years! Bill has created total realism and accuracy - I shiver when I look at it!
William Ravell replied:
Brian, thank you so much. Painting this scene for you is one of the most enjoyable highlights of my artistic career. Painting this from an old photo alone would not have resulted in an accurate recreation of the scene. However, your "across the pond emails" with your vivid memory of this scene and your justified respect for RNLI, brought this picture to life. Blending your knowledge of RNLI and my memories of similar experience in the USCG was a winning combination. In fact, the other paintings I did for you and the RNLI would not have come to life without your input. Thank you and the RNLI for brave and voluntary service to UK. The fact that RNLI operates on charitable contributions with no government funding is a testimony to the high esteem held for the brave men and women of RNLI.
