This barrel racer and her horse are riding like the wind! The photograph was taken at night during the Santa Maria Elks' Rodeo in Santa Maria, California. The arena lights provide the interesting "tail light" detail!

Barrel racing is one of the five timed rodeo events. At the professional level, it is almost entirely the domain of cowgirls.

The event involves riding in a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels set in a triangle in the large arena. The fastest time wins. Failure to complete the cloverleaf pattern results in a no time disqualification. Knocking over a barrel is a five second (or more) penalty which effectively means their time is too long to win.
