Description
Rome - Piazza del Popolo 03
A view, on a splendid sunny day, of one of the most loved places in the Eternal City, Piazza del Popolo in Rome. It is a huge square that is normally frequented by many tourists every day and by many Romans who walk there to go downtown or simply to go to work. It is certainly one of the most fascinating places in the capital of Italy, where stopping to admire the architectural landscape, with the famous twin churches, is a must. The origin of the name of the square is uncertain: there is an etymology that derives "people" from the Latin populus (poplar), based on the tradition that wants there was, in the area, a grove of poplars belonging to the tomb of Nero, that was there at. It is historical news, however, that Pope Pasquale II built a chapel near the walls, at the expense of the Roman people (the one on which the present church of Santa Maria del Popolo would later): of the people was the Virgin, of the People became the square.
The two twin churches, as they are called Santa Maria in Montesanto (1675) and Santa Maria dei Miracoli (1678), are built at the behest of Alexander VII, but the works end only after the disappearance of the pontiff (1667), deeply renewing the appearance of the square, and forming the two poles of the Trident, formed by Via del Corso, via del Babuino and via di Ripetta. The two buildings, which give the square a baroque appearance, are initiated by Carlo Rainaldi and completed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, with the collaboration of Carlo Fontana.
