Description
This was taken from the first floor, about halfway to the stage. This gives you a good idea of how the seating is for those not climbing the stairs to the balcony. Curves figure prominently in this unique auditorium's design.
The Ryman was built as a tabernacle, thus the wonderfully curved, wooden pews and its 'Mother Church of Country Music' nickname.
The auditorium first opened as the Union Gospel Tabernacle in 1892. It was built by Thomas Ryman, (1843 -1904), a riverboat captain and Nashville businessman who owned several saloons. He conceived of the auditorium as a tabernacle for the influential revivalist Samuel Porter Jones. After Mr. Ryman's death, the tabernacle was renamed Ryman Auditorium in his honor. The architect, Hugh Cathcart Thompson, designed the auditorium. (Wikipedia)
This is my most popular print. It has found good homes all around the country - which really means a lot to me. If you have been fortunate enough to visit the Ryman, you recognize all the details in this image. I want to go back!!

You got me here on the curves, Glenn; great swoops of them! You've provided a glimpse in one amazing composition ... the lights, the tiers of seats .. that there is more than meets the eye than what's just in front of us at eye level :))
Glenn DiPaola replied:
Well that's nice. Thank you Connie. The place is all about the curves - and the music. This is my most popular image. People love The Ryman.
