The J21 was a Swedish built single-seat, single-engine attack plane that later became a first-generation jet fighter. Its design was a twin-boom tail pusher configuration. It had two longitudinal booms, attached to the main wing but extending backwards from the middle section of each wing, with the main fuselage placed in the middle in a configuration similar to the Lockheed P-38. As result of the power provided by this engine and the aerodynamic characteristics, the J 21 was said to have excellent handling, benign stall characteristics and tight turning circle. The armament also gave this fighter good firepower, with Swedish pilots comparing it with the Mustang P 51D.
The jet version, the J 21R was fitted with air intakes at both sides of the fuselage. The engine, a de Havilland Goblin 2 and later a Swedish-licensed version, a Flygmotor RM2B was located in the same area as the piston-propelled version, elongating the main body.
