Description
It is a very small bird (8 inches) with short black legs and runs rapidly up and down the beach, following the surge of the waves out, all the while probing rapidly in the wet sand for food. As the waves rush in, the Sanderling manages to run back up the beach just inches ahead of the wave swash.
