Five hundred years ago you could climb atop the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence Italy and view Santa Croce standing tall over the tangle of surrounding medieval streets and buildings. Just close your eyes to the construction cranes and you just might convince yourself that you have done some time travel! The Basilica di Santa Croce (Basilica of the Holy Cross) is the principal Franciscan church in Florence, and a minor basilica of the Roman Catholic Church. The construction of the current church began in 1294, and it was consecrated in 1442. The bell tower was built in 1842, replacing an earlier one damaged by lightning while the neo-Gothic marble facade dates from 1857-1863. The Jewish architect Niccolo Matas from Ancona designed the church's facade, working a prominent Star of David into the composition. Santa Croce is the burial place of some of the most illustrious Italians, such as Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli. Thus it is known also as the Temple of the Italian Glories (Tempi...
