Description
The story of how I’ve spent more than a year video-recording jazz historian Theron “Ike” Carter for a music heritage book project, is well-known by now. What is less known at this point is how our conversations have inspired corresponding visual art: like the mixed-media collage painting seen here.
The SAVANNAHVERSE JAZZ AND EXISTENTIAL PROCLAMATIONS OF THE BLUES visual art series was not planned. Like many live performances of jazz itself, it was a spontaneous improvisation applied to works in progress since 2018. I coined the term SAVANNAHVERSE (not aware of anyone else who’s ever used it) to express the many paradoxical nuances which make the city of Savannah, Georgia, so captivatingly unique. It is both very old, being one of the United States’ original 13 colonies, and yet very modern with a healthy film industry. It contains a blend of ethnic cultures––African American, Irish, Greek, Latinx, and diverse immigrants–– which all add to its allure.
Certain landmarks like the statues of the Telfair Academy of Arts Museum and the Savannah River Bridge help define the various elements which make up the Savannahverse. They are presented here in shades of teal, indigo, silver, black, dark violet, magenta, wine, blue, white, and orange. Framing the landmarks is an abstract landscape reflective of the blossoming shrubs and vines seen in the city’s historic squares and neighborhoods throughout Savannah in spring and summer months.
Proceeds from sales of Savannahverse Jazz and Existential Proclamations of the Blues Number 2 help provide support for the ongoing Music Heritage Project. (Those who wish to learn more about the project and donate to it can do so at: https://gofund.me/7f16f250 ). The official fundraiser for the project is running from April (which is National Poetry Month and Jazz Appreciation Month) until June 2023 (which is African-American Music Month).
