The Shakers were a religious sect that started with fewer than 10 people and grew to form religious communes in New England. They raised their own crops and livestock and manufactured numerous items to raise income that they became known for such as Shaker brooms, boxes, cloaks, and furniture. They finally died out because of their belief in celibacy. They lived in dorms where they lived, ate, worked and worshipped together. One item they were known for was the Shaker box, an oval of different sizes with a unique non-overlapping seam. .They were in high demand until cheaper tin boxes became available.
