I bought this for a toy dog, who reminds me of Sheriff Rosco P Coltranes dog "Flash" from the 80's TV show The Dukes of Hazzard. The Confederate flag reminds me of the show. Really pleased with my Wife's handiwork! Thanks guys.
Smoky lived with two other mustangs and some domestic horses at a nearby ranch where my husband Juel and I board our two oldest horses. Smoky and the other mustangs were born in the wild and adopted by the ranch family, who loved him very much. Smoky lived an ideal life roaming the hills and meadows with his buddies. He always liked to come hang out with Juel and me as we fed our old horses their grain. Smoky would doze contentedly, almost always with his hind legs crossed. I knew him in his most peaceful moments. But like all mustangs, the three geldings didn't always get along. When new horses were introduced to the herd -- especially a mare! -- the mustangs got into some major battles. A week ago, during one of these fights, the other two mustangs accidently ran Smoky into a haying rake and he was killed. The family is heartbroken, and so are Juel and I. We'll never forget Smoky, and I created this painting in his honor.
I have been an artist since I was knee high to a short-horned locust. My dad, Willoughby Senior (FAA) was a professional artist and writer and I have stepped in his shoes since I was born, though he drew horses better than I did when I was a kid. My family lived in a hand-hewn log cabin we built ourselves in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and had no water or electricity. I love my life with my husband and family in Wyoming among the horses, gophers, deer, antelope, coyotes, red-tailed hawks, and the wild landscape. My work is driven by the land, animals, wild plants and birds I have come to know so well. Hummingbirds still try to get nectar from my upturned fingers. My artwork consists of all these things and more...

Dawn, I was so moved by your story. This painting is such a heartfelt, beautiful tribute to Smoky. It shines with all that is good in the west, lush meadows, water, blue sky days, hills and mountains, and the company of horses.
