since i last commented on this We visited an audobon perseve in the everglades where we learned how these beautiful birds were slaughtered for feathers for fancy hats for the the ladies... platforms were built in nesting areas where spotters camped for weeks to protect the breeding flock, amazing birds... amd my favorite wader...

Carol Senske replied:

Vanity (a desire to have feathers and furs, ivory and bones, bear gall bladders and tiger penises, etc.) caused many species to become extinct, endangered, or at least threatened. All for what? To look better or perform better than the person beside you? Those who camped and protected the nesting families have my undying appreciation.

Unparalleled art photography, bravo Carol!

Carol Senske replied:

You are obviously a sweet, gentle soul, Ante:>) Thank you very , very much for this generous compliment! Have a terrific week.

This is my favorite. I love the sunlight on the bird, making him seem another color! Then add to that the gorgeous blue of the water and you have an exquisite photograph. VOTED!

Carol Senske replied:

Hi, Eloise:>. Thank you so much for liking my egret:>). I took the picture just because of the golden sunset reflecting on the bird, so I truly appreciate that you especially commented on that.

Beautiful and ever so elegant, this egret with waves. Your photographs present much warmth and love for nature. I want to thank you ever so much, too, for featuring my paintings recently in your fine group. -- Asha

Carol Senske replied:

Thank you, Asha!

Well done, Carol. I have a devil of a time getting a good photo of these creatures. It seems they are always on the move, and then of course there is the whites. Beautiful capture.

Carol Senske replied:

I also have the most difficult time getting close enough to them to get a picture, and white is ALWAYS trouble! Thank you for the kind words:>)

Wow Carol! I love this. The golden glow from the setting sun and the "golden slippers" as you say make this bird and photograph just perfect. (I love the foamy waves too).

Carol Senske replied:

Thanks! Your comment is especially appreciated as I know the beauty of your bird images!!! Matter of fact, I wish you were there to do this guy (gal?) justice:>).

Our white Herons are all fresh water, this is a great catch. two of my favorite elements Herons and the ocean.

Carol Senske replied:

Hi, Sharon:>), They do live in fresh water environs as well, just not in the numbers as the coastal populations. I like the "golden slippers" (their yellow feet are such a contrast to the black legs). They are all (herons and egrets) beautiful birds, and I'm glad they were protected in time to save them from becoming ladies' hats!

Excellent and beatiful take

Carol Senske replied:

You're very kind, Angel:>) Thanks! The sun was setting and cast a golden glow on the egret - couldn't resist trying a picture.

I was disappointed that the image on this pouch was not very clear. The zipper doesn't work real well, either.

Artist's Description

Snowy egrets are medium-sized, white herons found both in fresh and salt water environments. Once hunted to near extinction (late 1800's) for it's feathers, protection has allowed their population to increase. Their range is now generally throughout the coastal United States and can even be found inland. The northern-most birds migrate south while southern populations may be permanent residents in their locales.

They feed on wetland creatures like insects, frogs, crustaceans, and fish, often walking along raking the bottom with their feet to stir up a meal.

This bird was wading at sunset along the beach in Frisco, on Hatteras Island, NC. I took the picture October 16, 2011.

About Carol Senske

Carol Senske

I always wanted to try photography, and my retirement offered an opportunity to do just that. The natural world is my first love. Here you will find pictures of things both large (landscapes, for instance) and small (macro) that catch my eye. I hope the images serve as a window into the natural world many of you don't have the chance to see. In a sense, I'm trying to create a guided nature trail, sharing what information I have about the subject. I'm always grateful for new and better information and welcome all input. Learning is food for the mind and soul. Nothing is ever harmed in the picture-taking process, but some things that wander into our home (like spiders) are carefully removed from the house after they serve as "models"....
