Description
Solar prominence. Ultraviolet SOHO image of a solar prominence (centre) in the corona of the Sun. Mass ejections such as this can cause a variety of effects if they are directed toward Earth, including powerful aurora displays and electrical blackouts. This image was taken in January 2003, in the light of ionised helium (30.4 nanometres wavelength), by the EIT (Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope) instrument on board the SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) spacecraft.
