Description
The Sonoran Blue butterfly, about the size of a US quarter cent piece, mates in early March. In this image the butterfly is a female laying her eggs on a succulent. These plants grow on the walls of the American River Canyon south of Auburn, California, adjacent to historic highway 49. One can identify this specimen as a female because it has one bright orange spot on each wing. The males have two spots.

A beautiful photograph, Jim! I have never seen this kind of butterfly before and you have captured her so well! thanks for sharing. L/F
Jim Thompson replied:
Thank you Sarah. I am not sure of their range, but they do breed and survive as I described, in the American River Canyon east of Sacramento.
