Description
Spiral galaxy NGC 300, Hubble Space Telescope image. Galaxy NGC 300 is 6.5 million light years away from Earth in the Sculptor group of galaxies. A galaxy consists of many millions, more often billions, of stars orbiting a common centre of gravity. There are many hundreds of billions of galaxies throughout the universe. This composite image is formed from blue, green and infrared filtered images taken by the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) in July and September 2002. The resolution obtained by the ACS is between ten and twenty times more powerful than ground-based telescopes.
