Description
Steel-yard balance weights. 19th-century artwork of ancient weights designed for use on steel-yard balances. Mr Samuel Woodward of Norwich exhibited drawings of what were thought to be steel-yard weights, found buried in a piece of waste land in the parish of Catton, near Norwich. The exterior surfaces are brass, with the smaller weight still filled with lead. The report stated that the arms displayed are a lion and a Roman double-headed eagle. These insignia may represent Richard of Cornwall (1209-1272), King of the Romans from 1257. Published in Volume 25 (1832) of 'Archaeologia', the journal of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
