"Stepping Stones on the New River" is an intimate look at some rapids on one small section of ones of the world's oldest rivers. The colors are peaceful and the atmosphere is serene. Native Americans called the New River the River of Death. It can be a treacherous river with a lot of whirlpools and there have been many drownings as a result of the rapids and dangerous sections. With proper safety precautions people enjoy all sorts of wonderful recreation and I love to paint different sections at different times of the year. Fisherman are especially fond of the river and tubing down it is a great past-time for many students.

In this painting I wanted to capture the energy of both the river and the sky with the strong cloud effect and continual display of rapids. The blues and greens are intense which also echo the dynamic quality of the river. As a child I spent much of my time around creeks with stones that I could walk across.
